Who is King Francis from the novel, Wolf Hall?

King Francis is the king of France. Seeking to avoid war with England, and seeking to further his own position, Francis is happy to intervene on Henry’s behalf to the Pope in lieu of Henry’s new marriage. Francis is able to delay the Pope’s excommunicative orders for Henry.
