While Nyawira first jokes with Kamiti that in burying the bags of money he is hoping to grow money, this is what actually happens in the novel. The literal manifestation of money trees represents the dream of being able to produce capital as if by magic, separated from any questions of labor. This is a dream that so many Aburirians--A.G., Kahiga, Njoya, Tajirika, Sikiokuu, and the Ruler--share. Moreover, they dream about growing money for themselves, not for others. Thus, as the money trees show, these characters are not only lazy, they are greedy too.
