The State House, where the Ruler lives and conducts business in Eldares, is described as opulent and impressive, unlike other slums in Aburiria. However, despite its opulence, the physical description of the State House reflects the grim and depressing activities that take place there as the Ruler seeks to gain and maintain his power. For example, it is noted that the walls and ceiling of the secret State Chamber are rumored to be made of the skeletons of the students, teachers, workers, and small farmers that have been killed for resisting the Ruler’s ascension to power. Thus, the State House’s very construction reflects the bloody and violent strategies that the Ruler used to rise to and consolidate his power.
