How does the author use flashbacks in the novel, Wizard of the Crow?

The author uses flashbacks to illuminate the reader about Vinjinia's past. Through the flashbacks, we learn that Vinjinia was once a teacher, and that she and Titus once had a loving and stable relationship. Now, however, money has corrupted their relationship, leaving Vinjinia unable or unwilling to stand up to her husband and the Ruler’s authoritarian, repressive regime.
