Why is Detective Willard's search of Junior's truck illegal in the story, Witness to a Trial?

Detective Willard’s search of the truck was illegal not only because he had no search warrant but also because he did not have probable cause to suspect that Junior was involved in the murders. Admission of the gun into evidence at the trial was also technically not legal since it was found during an illegal search.
