What was Leonard Stephen Vole's interest in Emily French in the motion picture, Witness for the Prosecution?

Out of work, Vole decides to find a different way to make money. He meets Miss Emily French and becomes close friends with her. He convinces Emily that she should change her will to make him the primary recipient of her money, and after all the paperwork goes through, he kills her in cold blood.
