Silas and Bernice's mother comes to the hospital when Bernice is admitted and immediately contradicts everything the doctors tell her. Eventually, Bernice dies, and their mother blames everyone within earshot for Bernice's death. Heartbroken, Silas and Bernice's mother dramatizes the experience of enduring prejudice from white people, to the extent that it, in her view, killed her daughter.
