What can we infer is the reason for Esjay's lack of enthusiasm over his sister's engagement in the novel, Within These Wicked Walls?

Although Esjay is aware of the engagement between Kelela and Magnus, he doesn't seem to be anxious for them to follow through on the wedding. We might infer that this is because he does not expect Magnus to escape the curse.
