Emoni's father, Julio, returns to Puerto Rico after her mother's death, where he advocates for the people of Puerto Rico, and rails against colonialization. Although Emoni sometimes resents that Julio can get behind and support all of the community causes in Puerto Rico, she wonders why he cannot rally around her. She laments: "It's like the best of him is reserved for strangers" (117). For Emoni, Puerto Rico comes to represent abandonment, as she struggles to figure out why her father could not stay with her in Philadelphia and why he often leaves without notice.
