What event changes the relationship between Emoni and Pretty Leslie in the novel, With the Fire on High?

Pretty Leslie is initially jealous of Emoni, a jealousy that comes to a head in Spain, where she "trash-talks" Emoni while drunk in a club. Although Emoni and Malachi get her home safely, Emoni confronts Leslie about her mean-spirited ways. Leslie admits that she envies Emoni, who is surprised given her circumstances.
