With the Fire on High
What does Spain represent to Emoni in the novel, With the Fire on High?
.
.
Sevilla represents rebirth and opportunity for Emoni. Emoni marvels at the bright colors and cobblestone streets yet notes that it is just another 'hood in some ways. It has equal parts of culture and crime, and develops its own persona based upon the heritage of its people. Emoni knows this opportunity is a rare opportunity to explore her own identity noting: "I'll be able to birth a new version of myself" (276). She is able to shrug off the responsibility of being a mom and this allows her to explore her relationship with not only Malachi, but also with herself. Here she is afforded all sorts of freedom, both in the kitchen and in her life. She finds inspiration and passion in Spain, and returns home with a new sense of self.
