Mercedes Sosa is referenced on Emoni's last night in Spain. Mariana tells her that Sosa has "duende" or passion and inspiration. The song causes Emoni to have an epiphany about home. Emoni reflects that Sosa "sings about how everything changes, the shallow and the profound, the shiny and the old; everything but the love for home changes" (346). Sosa symbolizes the important of place and the idea of having roots. Despite the fact that Emoni's neighborhood is considered the Badlands, she inherently knows it is her 'hood and where she truly belongs.
