Action in the novel largely takes the form of storytelling, and Red is the primary agent of storytelling as a form of action. At the largest level, Red tells a story to the novel’s readers to help them listen to the stories around them and learn to consider different points of view. Within that story, Red struggles between the two options of speaking and not speaking, and ultimately chooses to speak to Samar and Stephen. Red’s story helps to initiate the more concrete actions in the text by offering hope and wonder and inspiring others to take further action.
