While some aspects of Wishtree's narrative lie wholly within the realm of fantasy, others bear a closer resemblance to the genre of magical realism embraced by writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In Chapter 8, Red describes how Samar had begun to sneak out each night shortly after moving into the blue house with her family. Red then states that because Samar's "gentleness [is] so apparent," the creatures always come to join her in the moonlight. Every night, Samar goes outside and is soon joined by all manner of animals, including opossums, raccoons, owls, and squirrels. A fantastical event is thus described in a matter-of-fact manner.
