There are many instances within Wishtree when Applegate educates the reader about a particular aspect of environmental science, while continuing the forward motion of the narrative. In one such instance, Red is discussing the way in which trees are much tougher than humans "in many ways" (33). Red expands upon the point by saying that "only one percent of a fully grown tree is actually alive at any one time" (33). Applegate thus tailors her techniques to match the characteristics of her intended audience.
