A major conflict in the novel Wishtree is Red’s internal struggle between action and inaction. Red sometimes feels unable to make a difference or to fix the problems that play out right underneath Red's branches, in large part due to a lack of mobility. Over the course of the novel, however, Applegate depicts the drive to take action despite even the most stringent limitations as a courageous one. Not being able to move, Red seems to suggest by the end of the novel, is not an excuse for apathy or inaction. Planning and performing actions that make the world a better place are seen as the ultimate responsibility for any creature and no one is immune from the responsibility.
