Red tells the reader that there are three hollows in total within Red's boundaries. Red names three different hollows, two of which are medium-sized hollows that were caused by woodpeckers. The largest hollow, however, is the most important since it is provides the most protection from the elements and the greatest feeling of comfort to any creature finding sanctuary there. Because the hollow was caused by Red's loss of a branch due to heavy, wet snow, Red uses the opportunity to declare that "hollows are proof that something bad can become something good with enough time and care and hope" (23).
