Diana’s father, an art conservator, helped to restore old and damaged works of art. Diana opens the novel by recalling a memory of him working on the ceiling mural in Grand Central Terminal. He often brought Diana with him to job sites, letting her help with a tiny section of restoration that no one would notice.

Diana and her father had a close relationship up until his death. He was present for all of Diana’s major events and milestones. They shared a love of art, and he encouraged Diana to pursue a career in it. Diana laments that her father was the one that died while she had a strained relationship with her mother.
