The hot milk is a metaphor for Diana and Finn’s relationship. Finn gives Diana hot milk when she gets home from the hospital, insisting that she likes it and she is sick. Finn likes hot milk (a remnant from his childhood), not Diana. Furthermore, while Diana did just recover from Covid, she is no longer sick. The hot milk showcases that Finn is not in tune with Diana’s reality or needs. While the milk is only a few sentences in the book, it is emblematic of their entire relationship: Finn wants things a certain way, and does not include Diana in determining what he deems to be the correct path.
