Wish You Were Here

Diana has many flashbacks that take place in Kitomi Ito’s apartment. Kitomi lives in The Ansonia on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. She previously shared the apartment with her late husband, Sam Pride, a famous musician. Kitomi’s apartment houses her treasured painting by Henry Toulouse-Lautrec. Her painting, from Toulouse-Lautrec’s series Le Lit, showcases an incredibly intimate moment between the artist and a woman. The painting is the most significant piece of art in the story, and Diana talks about it the most while she is at Kitomi’s apartment. Kitomi and Diana also have serious, deep conversations about love and life while discussing the sale of the painting. Kitomi becomes one of Diana’s confidantes after her hospital stay, a friendship that would not have happened without Sotheby’s attempts to purchase the painting.
