Wish
What do Charlie and Wishbone have in common in the novel, Wish?
.
.
Wishbone, the wild dog that Charlie caught with the help of the members of her community, symbolizes Charlie. The dog is a stray, and Charlie feels as if she is a stray because she thinks that she does not have a home. The dog fights another dog who has a home, while Charlie pushes and kicks Audrey who has the type of home that Charlie wants. The dog runs away after its fight, in the same way that Charlie runs away after she insults Bertha. Wishbone returns to his old habits when tempted, and Charlie returns to her old habits when she feels threatened. Finally Wishbone realizes how good his home is with Charlie, Bertha, and Gus and comes home instead of returning to his life as a stray, like Charlie who comes to realize that she has a good home in Colby and decides to stay there instead of returning to her life as a stray in Raleigh. Throughout the narrative, Wishbone can go either way. He can move forward and have a good life or stay in the past. He choses to move forward as does Charlie.
