The novel uses the structure of the hero’s journey, including the steps associated with this type of journey. Readers learn about Charlie's dissatisfaction with her ordinary world through the wish she makes. Then, she receives his call to adventure. rejects it, and is finally forced to accept it and enter the unknown world. This world includes a new place and people Charlie perceives as being from a different social class. She faces tests and tribulations as she tries to find her identity. She faces her great ordeal when it seems as if she will have to return to Carla in Raleigh.
