When Charlie attends church with Gus and Bertha, she enters a place that allows her to participate in a supportive community helps her grow. The church is where Charlie learns how to improve herself and dress in a manner that suits her without trying to be like Jackie. It is also where she learns how to be grateful for what she has. She originally copied the other children when she wrote what she was grateful for. Over time, she learns what to be grateful for in her own life and how to own it by sharing it with the others at church.
