Throughout the book, but particularly in Section Five, snow becomes a symbol of both winter and "wintering," and of different qualities associated with both experiences. There are references to its beauty and purity, and there are references to how, after a while, the joy associated with snow transmutes into unhappiness with the hardships it causes.
