The author uses Medved, the bear, as a symbol of death and chaos. He is a creature that thrives in madness and shows Vasya and the other characters what their lives would become if consumed by power and ambition. This is shown by Medved’s character, as he never cares for anyone he hurts and frequently tells Vasya that life would be easier if she went mad. His ability to raise the dead represents the prolonged dangers of fear on the human subconscious.
