The narrator and Old Park have something resembling a parent/child relationship. When he discovers her in the kitchen, having just binged on a sausage and vomited, he shows the narrator kindness and compassion by putting his arm around her and carefully leading her back to her room. Moments of genuine kindness like this seem to be rare in the narrator's life.
