How does the author use symbolism in the novel, Winter in Paradise?

In the novel, the author uses the conch shell as a symbol of connection. Huck finds this shell and gives it to Irene on the day before she is to return to Iowa City. He makes a horn out of it and tells her that whenever she is lonely, she should blow on the horn and remember that he is her friend for life.
