Why do Winter and his companions travel to the Volcanic Island in the novel, Winter Turning?

Winter's group travels to the volcanic island in the hope of finding answers to the prophecy Moon issued as they were leaving Jade Academy. When they arrive, they discover that the island is covered in lava, rocks, and ash, and is completely uninhabitable.
