What is the importance of the map in the opening pages of the novel, Winter Turning?

The novel opens with a map of Pyrrhia, the continent that is the setting for the events of this series. The continent is shaped roughly like a dragon with the typical designations of forests, mountains, rivers, and desert. The kingdom of each of the seven main dragon tribes is also signified on this map.
