Why is Petyr Andreyevich executed in the novel, Winter Garden?

Petyr Andreyevich, the husband of Zoya and father of Olga and Vera, is a poet who is banned by the Russian leaders, but continues to write. He is arrested one night and imprisoned. He is later executed because of his poetry.
