What is the importance of the Wounded Knee Museum in the novel, Winter Counts?

The abandoned museum at the site of Wounded Knee is where Virgil finds Rick Crow and begins to discover the truth behind the drug networks on the reservation. It is also where he eventually discovers the truth about how there are two warring drug operations: the heroin dealers with whom Rick Crow has been working and the opioid pill dealers who answer to Ben Short Bear. The site is significant as a reminder of a historical atrocity that has been forgotten by many, and also as the site of a personal turning point for Virgil: He considers killing Rick Crow in the museum, but decides against it, opting for a more merciful path.
