Jessup's grave is located in the middle of a frozen pond. Mrs. Thump and her sisters escort Ree with a burlap sack over her head in the middle of the night to the site. Though Ree tries to calculate the turns they take on the drive, she cannot keep track of where they are going. When they arrive, the women tell Ree not to try to determine where they are, as they are not actually allowed to be showing her where Jessup is buried. Then they take Ree to the exact location of Jessup's body. Ree ventures into the center of the pond, and must break the ice in order to see her father. This is also the place where she must cut off her father's hands, in order to provide physical proof of his death to the police.
