Ree has been terrified of Uncle Teardrop for most of her life because of his unsettling appearance and gruff demeanor. She comes to realize that her fears are unfounded when he is one of the only people to come to her aid when she is desperate for help. As a result, Uncle Teardrop's surprising empathy and grace allow Ree to redefine her understanding of family.
