Why does Willa decide to leave the wedding rings behind when she steals from Nathaniel's home in the novel, Willa of the Wood (Book 1)?

The rings are a symbol of Willa's empathy. Typically, she steals half of everything valuable that she finds, but when she sees the wedding rings in Nathaniel's house she suspects they are important to him and decides to leave the rings.
