What is the symbolism of the River of Souls in the novel, Willa of the Wood (Book 1)?

The River of Souls is a symbol of the past. In the lower tunnels of Dead Hollow, painted handprints of Faeran throughout the centuries create a river across the wall, representing all the Faeran who existed in the clan through its history.
