The author's selection of Iphigenia as the Elder Mystic's name makes a strong literary allusion to the mythological character of the same name. Iphigenia in Greek mythology served as a priestess of Artemis, the goddess of the moon and natural environment. The mythological character was strongly devoted to nature, just as the Elder Mystic has pledged her life to caring for the Council Tree in North Wood.
