How does the Tox affect the animals that live in the area surrounding the school in the novel, Wilder Girls?

An enormous bear attacks the school after Hetty leaves the gate open, and Hetty is horrified to see the skin and tissue are gone from half its face because of the Tox. Other animals, including deer, have become carnivores.
