The tone of the novel is suspenseful as Timothy is beset by one obstacle after another in his quest to return to civilization. Once he has acquired the necessities—food, water, and shelter— the tone becomes more philosophical as Timothy becomes content and satisfied with his life. The book is a thoughtprovoking coming-of-age story in which a boy learns to live with himself as well as being an entertaining adventure.
