The man's yard is the primary setting for the short story. At the start of the narrative, the reader learns that the man has taken all of the furniture out of his house and arranged it in the front yard. Not long afterwards, the man leaves home for the market. While he is gone, the boy and the girl see the furniture from the road and decide to stop.
With the exception of the story's final two paragraphs, the rest of the story takes place on the yard amidst the furniture. The three individuals spend the evening together drinking, listening to records, and dancing.
