How does the author use symbolism in the short story, Why Don’t You Dance?

The man's furniture symbolizes the past. After his relationship ends, the man takes everything out of his house that is presumably associated with his life with the absent lover. He later tells the boy and the girl that everything has to go. He is desperate to erase all evidence and memory of his past relationship.
