Jeanette's childhood home at 200 Water Street is described as a narrow house with a small lobby, a formal parlor, a kitchen and a living room on the main floor. Upstairs there are two bedrooms. The only toilet is outdoors until Jeanette is fourteen when the second bedroom is divided and one half is turned into a bathroom.
