Throughout the narrative, money represents power, status, and security that Rich does not have. This is true of the money he had as a successful young artist; the money currently being earned by Angel, a successful young artist in his own right; and, most particularly, the money belonging to Amy and her husband Mike which, in turn, represents the money controlled by the class of wealthy, conservative Republicans to which Amy and Mike belong. In other words, money is a trigger of envy, resentment, and frustration for Rich - and yet, when he has the opportunity to gain some for himself, albeit by somewhat dishonest means, he rejects it. Meanwhile, lack of money represents and triggers stress, as well as concern that he will not be able to take care of his children.
