In Section One, several narrative elements are introduced that foreshadow later developments in the narrative. These include The Lady's reference to tomcats fighting, especially when needed, which foreshadows Whittington's fight with Havey in the following section, and her reference to the problems with the rats, which foreshadows the rats' appearance in the following section. A particularly important piece of foreshadowing is Whittington's reference to his previous owner, in that the reference foreshadows two key elements of the narrative - Ben's troubles reading and Whittington's concern, and the book's final moments, in which Whittington says he intends to go on a journey to find the boy. Finally, there is the reference to the circumstances of Abby and Ben living with Bernie and Marion, which foreshadows developments in Ben's reading situation (see Chapter 23, and also "Quotes", p. 106).
