Hick has a positive opinion of Roosevelt as a politician, though she notes his many shortcomings as a human being. He had affairs while married to Eleanor, first with Lucy Mercer, and later with his secretary Missy LeHand. Hick feels that Roosevelt abandoned LeHand after she suffered a serious stroke, failing to visit her as her health waned, despite their long and serious relationship with one another.
