How does Madame Petitjean show her selflessness and caring nature in the novel, White Bird: A Wonder Story?

When the Nazis rounded up the Jewish children, Madame Petitjean, Sara and Julien's teacher, demanded to go on the truck with them. Some of kids could not handle the winter march and needed to stay behind. Petitjean stayed behind with them, and then she died with them.
