Photography plays an important role in Dyer's analysis of light and whiteness. As a medium of light, photography cannot help but privilege white bodies given the way in which light reflects off of their skin, however he poses a striking critique of the way in which the medium has been used historically, claiming that the use of white faces as the norm for photography is what has truly led to non-white bodies being underprivileged and negatively represented in photographs. According to Dyer, the art of photography can treat non-white subjects with equality, however it has not done so in the past.
