Even two people who have the same upbringing, such as twins Joshua and Christophe in this novel, approach life differently as individuals. Initially, Christophe and Joshua handle the job situation similarly as they move into adulthood. They both hope to get jobs and take care of Ma-mee as she has taken care of them. Neither plans on leaving Bois Sauvage. Then, Joshua is hired at the docks, but Christophe is not hired. For a short time, Christophe continues to look for a job. Then, Dunny offers him a part time job dealing marijuana. Christophe's weak character takes over, and he accepts the offer. Since selling marijuana provides a better income than manual labor, he quits job hunting. Though Joshua's job on the docks is hard and pays little, his character proves to be strong. He continues on his job.
