Why does Ima Dean throw out the candy Mrs. Connell gave them?

The candy was old and dirty, which is ironic because Mrs. Connell told them Ima Dean looked ragged and they should not take her out like that. Mrs. Connell is rude, and Ima Dean picks up on that even though she is a small child.
