What leads up to Mary Call's breakdown with the children in Chapter 7?

Like the children they are, the Luthers are excited to get a car and get caught up in the excitement. When it runs out of gas, Mary Call realizes she has also gotten excited about it. She is tired of the responsibility and taking care of the children and it finally wears on her outwardly.
