Who is Mbejane from When the Lion Feeds and what is their importance?

Mbejane is a Zulu from the Chaka's blood meaning Rhinoceros. He is part of the original patrol of four mounted white men and half a dozen Zulus that are sent to scout towards the northeast. He takes the reins from Sean's horse while Sean drinks and Sean likes him immediately. He wears only a kilt of civet cat tails. He has no rattles, no cloak and no headdress. He carries a black rawhide shield and two short stabbing spears.
